Rowdy Meadow Debuts in Architectural Digest
Since 2010, Reed Hilderbrand has been master planning, designing, and building a sculpture-filled property in northeast Ohio.
The January 2020 issue of Architectural Digest covers the private house on site, designed by Peter Pennoyer Architects with Reed Hilderbrand. Constructed in the style of Czech Cubism, the residence occupies the center of the property and is augmented by a matrix of landscape interventions including formal gardens, multiple outdoor patio spaces, and an expansive potager. The landscape is a considered series of walking paths that meander the site’s meadows and woods and afford the discovery of works by Andy Goldsworthy, Richard Serra, Anish Kapoor, Ai Weiwei, and others.
“He saw this project as much as an effort of conservation as the building of a home,” notes Gary Hilderbrand referring to the property owner. The project’s larger vision was addressed through the “protecting of the diverse topography, fortifying of the ravine, nurturing of the forest understory, and addition of rows of apple trees to honor the orchards that once thrived on the property.”
