Crystal Bridges
A forested river is the site of Moshe Safdie’s museum for the Walton family, a sequence of eight linked pavilions balancing views and access to nature and art.
American heiress Alice Walton commissioned this museum to house a collection representing the history of art in the United States. She chose Bentonville, Arkansas, as its site, and selected Moshe Safdie and Reed Hilderbrand to be its designers. Situated below the region’s famous Crystal Spring, a two-stage dam creates the focal point for the complex. Strategic changes to the riparian geology and the existing tree canopy enabled the sensitive insertion of the museum’s architecture. Art installed on the grounds includes the James Turrell skyspace The Way of Color. Over three miles of trail circuit the Museum.
