Chazen Museum of Art
A stone-paved courtyard, emphasizing the new Chazen’s openness and accessibility, wraps the museum into University of Wisconsin-Madison’s greater urban context.
The expansion of the Chazen Museum of Art advances the renewal of the Arts and Humanities District of the University of Wisconsin. The project extends the East Campus Mall an additional two city blocks immediately between the volume of the expansion and the existing 1970s museum building by Harry Weese. In doing so, it strengthens connections between the arts district, the State Street Mall and Bascom Hill, the Memorial Union, and the active edge of Lake Mendota. A new Arts Piazza, with arrival areas for the Chazen and the future music building, creates a new place for daily activities, special events, and educational programs, as well as an expanded outdoor sculpture program.
